year the St Ermin’s hotel had a whopping £30-million pound refurbishment which left the interiors and exteriors looking pretty swish. We checked-in to check out how much the hotel had changed and to see how it compared to other London hotels.

Located in the heart of Westminster, down a pretty nondescript road, you might think you’d taken a wrong turn until you looked to the left and spotted the picture perfect courtyard and historic hotel. The hotel has 331 rooms and suites and we were located in a Deluxe King Suite with views over the courtyard, and if we stood right in the corner of the window we could just about spot Big Ben in the distance. The suite had its own lounge with a dining table for six people, sofas, arm chairs, a huge Plasma TV and a BOSE surround sound cinema system that wouldn’t look out of place on MTV’s Cribs. In fact we’d be pretty happy if this was our crib…

In the bedroom was a king-sized two poster bed, another plasma TV, huge bathroom with free standing roll top bath, two basins, a digitally controlled rain shower and oodles of White Company products. Outside of the room the public areas are just as impressive – the lobby has been restored to its previous grandeur with the original chandeliers, a large centred staircase and quirky artwork – there’s even a little library should you fancy a read.

But the real reason to leave your room is to visit the Caxton bar and Grill  – it was apparently here that Winston Churchill held his meetings during World War II (tell that one to the kids) plus they have a Josper Grill (tell that one to the meat lovers). The Grill serves modern European dishes using seasonal and local produce with a healthy selection of steaks from the Ginger Pig in North Yorkshire.

On returning to your room don’t be surprised in you find a visitor on your bed of the insect variety! Don’t worry it’s only chocolate and 100% edible – the hotel place chocolate bee’s on the beds of each guests which are a reference to the hotel’s colony of 75,000 bees on the rooftop which produce honey for use in the hotel’s kitchen.

The next morning after a lovely nights sleep in our huge bed we headed back to the Caxton Grill to sample a full English breakfast, all made from local produce. Service is efficient and most importantly the atmosphere is relaxed  – unlike other luxury London hotels you don’t feel the need to whisper.

St Ermin’s has both style and substance – We’d certainly be happy to recommend!
